Child Development Laboratory School celebrates one year

Provides quality preschool to University, local community

Chicago (Dec. 13, 2006) – Saint Xavier University’s Child Development Laboratory School recently celebrated its first birthday of providing full-day preschool for area families.

The lab school provides developmentally appropriate education for children 3 to 5 years old. The school currently serves 22 students but has openings for more. The school integrates teaching, learning and service, benefiting children and their families as well as future teachers.

“The Child Development Laboratory School is a wonderful environment where children, families and teachers all work together to help prepare children for success in school and in life,” director Kelly O’Brien said. “The school strives to meet these goals with every child we serve.”

Ten of the 22 preschoolers are from the surrounding area, evidence that the school is filling a need in the community. Eight students are children of Saint Xavier staff and faculty members, and four are children of Saint Xavier students.

“The lab school is geared toward meeting the needs of area working families by providing a quality educational environment for their children, with flexible hours and year-round care,” said O’Brien, who has a master’s degree in early childhood education.

The lab school provides a nurturing, safe environment that is child-directed, inquiry-based and play-centered. Located at the United Methodist Church of Mount Greenwood, 11000 South St. Louis Ave., Chicago, the school offers full-day preschool services for children of the community as well as Saint Xavier alumni, students, faculty and staff.

Open year-round, the lab school uses Creative Curriculum, a play-based plan of activities for preschool-aged children that focuses on the environment. Programs are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily with choices of Monday through Friday (five days); Monday, Wednesday and Friday (three days) or Tuesday and Thursday (two days). A one-time annual registration fee of $35 is due with application.

The lab school is connected with Saint Xavier’s School of Education, which provides the opportunity to serve as a resource for educational research and as a clinical teaching placement site for future teachers. The School of Education provides a professional development plan for all teaching personnel in order to support their development and continued growth within the field.

The Child Development Laboratory School has five full-time staff members and five work-study students, which provides a low teacher/student ratio and increased individualized attention.

“I believe the cornerstone of an effective preschool program is having highly qualified teachers,” O’Brien said.
