Women invited to participate in Heart Smart for Women Program

Saint Xavier offers free 12-week program

Chicago (Jan. 3, 2007) – Saint Xavier University invites area women to participate in a free Heart Smart for Women Program that begins Jan. 22 at Saint Xavier’s Orland Park campus and Jan. 23 at Saint Xavier’s Chicago campus.

“Heart disease continues to be a growing concern for all Americans,” said assistant nursing professor Monica Ryan, project director and director of Saint Xavier University’s Health Center. “This program is designed to provide women with the tools and resources necessary to improve their quality of life.”

Saint Xavier is able to offer the 12-week program at no charge to participants thanks to a $30,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Office of Women’s Health.

The Heart Smart for Women Program is open to all women, including local community members, students, faculty and staff of Saint Xavier University. The 12-week session is led by nurses and nurse practitioners and includes guest speakers such as fitness experts, dietitians and stress management consultants. Each participant will be provided an opportunity to meet with a nurse prior to the start of the program to evaluate blood pressure, weight, height, fasting lipids and body mass index. These measurements will also be available to each participant three months after they complete the program to evaluate progress.

The weekly session at the Orland Park campus, located at 18230 Orland Parkway, will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays starting Jan. 22. The weekly session at the Chicago campus, located at 3700 W. 103rd St., will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Jan. 23. A special session specifically designed for SXU students will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting Jan. 25 at the Chicago campus. All sessions conclude the week of April 16 (there is no class the week of April 2).

Registration is now open and will continue until each session has 20 participants. For more information, please contact the Health Center at Saint Xavier University at (773) 298-3914 or visit www.sxu/health_center.
