The seminar examines different models of pastoral counseling with attention to:

  • Select theories of personality development;
  • Definitions of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health;
  • Spiritual diagnosis, assessment, short-term and informal counseling; 
  • Boundaries and personal limits;
  • Listening with imagination and heart;
  • Storytelling and personal revelation; 
  • Issues across the life span, grief and loss;
  • Crisis counseling and domestic violence and abuse;
  • The sacraments of healing and theology of sacramental presence;
  • The Church as a healing community; and 
  • The spiritual life and growth of the lay minister.

Rev. David Neff, holds a doctor of ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary and a Certificate in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute. Rev. Neff has extensive experience in pastoral ministry and most recently completed a decade of service as senior pastor of Morgan Park Presbyterian Church. He is active in the Protestant-Catholic dialogue and ecumenical activities.

This course may be taken for 3 graduate credit hours or on a non-credit basis or as an audit.
