Study Teams

The strategic planning process at Saint Xavier University formally commenced on the evening of January 8, 2004 when nearly 100 members of the University Community gathered together to review and to discuss the findings of a survey of possible strategic directions conducted in December 2003.

After a presentation about a summary of strategic issues with high priority, breakout sessions were held to identify critical strategic questions that will guide the planning process in the coming months. Study Teams have been formed to address strategic issues identified in this survey pertaining to five broad areas of University life:

Over the next four months (January through April 2004) the Study Teams will:

  • Conduct in-depth analyses of University strengths and weaknesses
  • Do environmental scanning to identify threats and opportunities
  • Identify best practices pertinent to strategic issues
  • Articulate broad strategic directions to guide institutional planning
  • Propose one or more strategic initiatives in the coming fiscal year

Study Teams will conduct activities under the following working assumptions:

  • The University will maintain fiscal responsibility
  • The visibility of the University will be enhanced
  • Strategic plans will remain faithful to the core values of the University
  • Quality will be improved at all levels
  • Drafts of strategic proposals will be tested and in one or more public forums

The statements of initiatives, along with proposals for strategic initiatives will be presented to the Board of Trustees as the May 2004 meetings. These materials will constitute the end products of the first phase of strategic planning that will take place over the next four months.

This document includes excerpts of published strategic directions and strategic initiatives from a Catholic university located in the Midwest. Study Teams will produce materials along these lines by early April 2004. Notations pertaining to deadlines and costs were added to the following examples in order to reflect the greater degree of precision and accountability sought in the Saint Xavier University planning process. More detailed implementation plans will be developed by Study Teams and upon Board approval of specific strategic initiatives.
