Abandoned Vehicles

Vehicles left in an abandoned state will have a warning notice affixed to the driver’s side rear window.  If after five (5) days the vehicle is not claimed, it will be towed and stored at the owner’s expense.  If for any other reason you must leave your vehicle on campus, notify the Department of Public Safety at extension 3541.

Accidents

If you are hit by another vehicle or are in any way involved in an accident on University property, you should call the Department of Public Safety and the Chicago Police Department.  For insurance reasons, it is highly recommended that you do both.

Appeals

Citations must be appealed in writing to the Director of Public Safety within fourteen (14) days of issuance.  If not appealed within fourteen (14) days, recipient forfeits all appeal rights.

Bicycles

Bicycles are not required to be registered.  However, it is highly recommended that, for safety and theft reasons, you register your bicycle with the Chicago Police Department.

Driehaus Center Parking Restriction

General parking is not permitted at the Driehaus Center.  All of the spaces are reserved exclusively for Gilhooley’s Grande Saloon and Copy Cats customers.  There is ample parking for students, staff and faculty located behind the Driehaus Center in Parking Lot 14.

Fines and Payment

All fines should be paid in the Public Safety Office located in the Campus Service Center.  After the 14-day appeal period, fines should be paid in the Student Accounts Office located in the Warde Academic Center, room A 211.

Fire Lanes and Handicapped Parking Zones

Parking is not permitted at any time in fire lanes or designated handicapped parking zones.  If unloading passengers and/or packages, a vehicle may utilize loading zone parking spaces with hazard lights flashing provided the duration of the use does not exceed five minutes.  Citations will be issued for any vehicle parked in these areas not unloading passengers and/or packages.

Grace Period

All permits must be affixed within seven (7) days of the first day of classes for any given semester.  All citations for no permit or any expired permit will stand after that time.

Guest Parking

Guests remaining overnight must obtain and display a temporary parking permit available from any Public Safety Officer.  Permits will be issued on a temporary basis and guests will be required to complete either a temporary permit form, if residing in the Alumni Inn, or a residence hall visitor log.

Handicapped Parking

Handicapped parking is only available for use by individuals holding a valid temporary permit or special license plate issued by the Secretary of State, Department of Driver Services.  Applications and information sheets are available in the Department of Public Safety.  The Department can also issue a three-day temporary permit solely for on-campus use.

Late Fees

After fourteen (14) days, unpaid citation fees will automatically be charged a $5 late fee.  Where applicable, student accounts will be charged the fine and late fee.

New License Plate or Vehicle

It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to report any changes in license number subsequent to the original registration.  Note: the term “vehicle owner” refers to the person registering the vehicle with the Department of Public Safety.

On-Street Parking

There is no parking on 103rd Street, Central Park Avenue, or neighboring side streets.  The Chicago and Evergreen Park Police Departments patrol these areas.  Vehicles parked illegally on the streets around the University may be ticketed and towed.

Parking for Non-Student Groups

Members of all groups using Saint Xavier University facilities are required to abide by all University regulations.  They must acquire temporary permits through their group’s leader.  A twenty-four (24) hour notice is required to request temporary parking permits for any group exceeding forty (40) participants.  All requests will be based on parking availability and the needs of other groups using the campus.

Purchasing Permits for Non-University Affiliated Third Party Use

Students, faculty and staff are strictly prohibited from purchasing and providing a University parking permit to any non-University affiliated third party, whose intent it is to park their vehicle on University grounds in order to attend work or school in the surrounding community.  Violations of this regulation will result in a fine for Fraudulent Permit Use, seizure of the fraudulent permit and towing on the second offense.

Refunds

Individuals who purchase a parking permit for the entire academic year and find that it is not needed for the spring semester are eligible for a 50% refund.  To apply for a refund, bring the permit to the Student Accounts Office located in the Warde Academic Center, room A 211.  Refund requests are due no later than January 15, 2007.

Registration

All vehicles must be registered with the Department of Public Safety.  Note:  The term “vehicle” refers to any form of motorized transportation (i.e., cars, motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and all electric forms of transportation).

Resident Student Parking

Only resident students who have been issued an overnight residential parking permit may park a vehicle on campus.  These vehicles are assigned to specific parking lots. 

Resident students assigned to Parking Lot 14 are permitted to park their vehicle on the 103rd Street Campus in the southern half of Lot 7 and in Lot 10 on Friday and Saturday nights and on recognized University Holidays only.

Any vehicle in Parking Lot 2 (Bookstore) registered to or operated by a resident student, regardless of the time of day will be subject to an immediate tow.

Responsibility for Fines

The person who has registered a vehicle with the Department of Public Safety is responsible for all traffic and parking citations and fines for that vehicle, regardless of who was using it (unless previously reported stolen).  Resident students are responsible for all citations issued to their guests.

Repairing of Vehicles on Campus

Performing any major repairs and oil changes are prohibited. Registered owners are permitted to make minor repairs such as fixing a flat tire, replacing a battery or replacing light bulbs.

Temporary Parking Permits

Any individual needing a permit for a short time may apply for one at the Public Safety Office.  There is no charge.  These permits are only valid when dated and signed by an authorized Public Safety Officer.

Theft and Damage

Saint Xavier University cannot, and will not, assume responsibility for theft and/or damage to vehicles or their contents while on campus.  Vehicles should be locked at all times and valuables stored out of plain view.

Towing

A violation of any of the following regulations is just cause to have a vehicle towed:

  • Parking in a handicapped zone
  • Blocking a fire lane
  • Parking in a restricted area
  • Parking in a designated visitors’ space
  • Abandoned or hazardous vehicle
  • Unregistered vehicle parked overnight after 2:00 a.m.

Should a vehicle be towed off campus, payment is to the towing firm only and is the responsibility of the owner.  The University utilizes a licensed police tow company:

Unpaid Citations

Unpaid citations will be forwarded monthly to the Business Office and charged to the vehicle owner’s account.

Visitor Parking

Spaces designated for visitors are located in several areas on campus.  Parking in these spaces by registered students, faculty, or staff is not permitted.
