Black History Month Brings Art, Music and More to Saint Xavier
Events through February offer tribute to African-American history and culture
CHICAGO (Jan. 22, 2004) - Musical performances, art exhibitions and Saint Xavier's "I Have a Dream" speech competition will commemorate February as Black History Month. Coordinated in part by Saint Xavier University's Office of Student Life and the university's academic departments, the events are designed to celebrate, enlighten and inspire.
- ARTspiration, 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, McGuire Hall - Experience this fusion of visual and performing arts that will challenge social issues while raising awareness of creative expression and arts education.
- "Showtime at the Apollo," 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 11, McGuire Hall - This performance of variety sketches invites talent and creativity from the entire campus community. Presented by the Black Student Union.
- MLK Birthday Celebration, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, Student Lounge - The Black Student Union presents this annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- Sunday Liturgy recognizing Black History Month, 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, McDonough Chapel - This liturgy will be hosted by the department of Campus Ministry.
- Concert: "Harmony, Hope and Healing," 12 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, SXU Diner Atrium.
- Bollinger Memorial Lecture: "The African American Novel in the Shadow of Jim Crow: The Case of Ralph Ellison," 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, Butler Reception Room -- The department of English and Foreign Languages welcomes Dr. Kenneth Warren of the University of Chicago at this year's guest lecturer. A reception will follow the presentation.
- Annual "I Have a Dream" Student Speech Competition, 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, McGuire Hall - Words can change the world, and sometimes it takes only one voice. Saint Xavier students can compete in this event for cash prizes. Information available through the Student Life office at 773-298-3974.
- Honors Program Annual Guest Lecturer Laura S. Washington: "Why We Can't Afford to Run Away From Race," 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, Butler Reception Room - Laura S. Washington, award-winning editor, newspaper columnist and broadcast journalist will share how her groundbreaking coverage of race and poverty has helped to improve the quality of life for Chicago's poor. Presented by the Honors Program.
- Keynote Speaker: Rev. Paula McGee, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, Butler Reception Room - SXU welcomes Rev. Paula McGee, dynamic preacher and highly-regarded lecturer as our keynote speaker for Black History Month. A former basketball star, Rev. McGee is a life coach - inspiring and motivating people of all ages to be their very best.
- Drama: "Nebuchadnezzar," 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, McGuire Hall. Presented by SXU's Ambassadors for Christ (AFC) Upper-Room Ministry.
- Drama: "Royal Child," 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, McGuire Hall. Presented by SXU's Ambassadors for Christ (AFC) Upper-Room Ministry.
- Jazz Night at the Cotton Club at SXU, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, Butler Reception Room - Join the campus community for this unique evening of jazz and entertainment in our own version of Chicago's famed Cotton Club.
- Concert: "Something Inside So Strong," 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, McGuire Hall - Recording artist Antoinette "Toni" Brown - with students and friends - will conclude Saint Xavier University's celebration of Black History Month with a breathtaking night of gospel music.
