CHICAGO (June 6, 2003) – “God Matters,” WXAV-FM’s groundbreaking program earned second place for best public affairs program among the Chicago market by the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA). In an unprecedented move, WXAV, Saint Xavier University’s radio station, was nominated with Chicago mainstream radio including WGN, WBBM and WDRV.
“This is truly a remarkable achievement. WXAV is going from strength to strength and this award recognizes the continued efforts of Saint Xavier University in making sure that we have the best college radio station in Chicago. The fact that we can compete against stations like WBBM, WLS and WGN is exciting for Saint Xavier University and the students who work at WXAV-FM,” said Rob Quicke, Saint Xavier’s director of student media. “All of us feel like we have now made a significant impact upon the Chicago radio scene, and this award encourages us to do even better,”
“God Matters” earned its first Silver Dome Award nomination – a rarity in college radio – for its honest and contemporary “God Matters” talk show. Hosted by Sister Sue Sanders, RSM, who invites unconventional religious talk-show guests like Channel 2’s Mike Flannery and “Dead Man Walking” author Sister Helen Prejean, the show inspires public discourse from unique angles.
The Silver Dome Awards represent IBA's statewide competition among its members, presented each spring for accomplished work that aired in the previous year. Marketed as "best in the state of Illinois" honors, these awards recognize Illinois' finest radio and television work, as IBA members compete in a variety of categories. Competition is determined by market size, with first through third place recognition awarded to broadcasters in Illinois markets defined as "Chicago," "medium" and "small." Entries are judged by other state associations with winners announced at the annual dinner banquet on June 4.
The Silver Dome Awards competition is the IBA's largest fund-raiser of the year with proceeds supporting IBA's college endowment and Minority Internship Programs.
