Graduate program to begin fall 2003 semester
CHICAGO (June 13, 2003) -- Saint Xavier University has announced its Graham School of Management will offer master of science degrees in public and non-profit management and service management beginning this fall. The new program, which was approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) this week, will equip students with the skills to attract, organize and effectively manage human and capital resources in the profit, non-profit, and government sectors.
“The Public and Non Profit Management programs represent a further commitment to assisting public service organizations in achieving their organizational and societal goals,” John Eber, Dean of the Graham School of Management said. “This program, though organized under the Graham School of Management, is a University-wide effort and has University-wide commitment. The dean and several faculty members from the School of Arts and Sciences were involved in designing the programs, and there is also interest from Education and Nursing faculty.”
The program is especially designed for working administrators or for individuals seeking to develop administrative acumen while working in a variety of profit, non-profit and public sectors. Its purpose is to assist individuals in developing the capability of leading organizations in providing effective and efficient service to the community.
“Members of city and county government, police and fire departments, social service agencies, retail and service industries will find the degree advantageous as they pursue professional advancement” Sister Margaret Mary Hinz, RSM, Associate Director of Graduate Programs, South Campus said.
The master of science in public and non-profit management and master of science in service management was created as part of the University’s effort to expand programs to the Southland.
It will be offered at the university’s South Campus, which will move to a permanent facility in Orland Park in October 2003.
By providing these programs, the University addresses several needs of the surrounding community. Approximately 69% of the economy in the Chicago Southland region is represented by service industries, with health providers (in the form of nine hospitals and many other agencies), technical, managerial and administrative support services at the forefront. Growth in the service sector is expected to increase from 29% to 43% by the year 2010 in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
According to Hinz, the new programs target subjects and topics that managers in the public, non-profit and service industries face on a daily basis as they face the challenge of delivering high quality services. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of classes including “Leadership and Management Change,” “Service Marketing,” “Theory and Practice of Social Change,” and “Policy Analysis and Design.”
“This will be an excellent credential for a city manager, police or fire chief, director of a social service agency or hotel manager to have,” Hinz said. Benefits of a master of science in public and non-profit management, or service management include a degree from a well-respected university; credentials in profit, non-profit, public, or service management; personal commitment to service quality and leadership; opportunity for advancement in your career; networking with students and faculty from a wide range of organizations; staying ahead in your field; building unique and powerful new human capital processes and management practices; access to senior level executives and faculty expertise; a comprehensive knowledge base of current best practices; and broad perspectives and outcomes associated with service excellence and leadership.
