CHICAGO (July 25, 2001) -- Saint Xavier University will dedicate its new residence hall next Friday, August 3 at 2 p.m. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours of the building, and a reception.
McCarthy Hall will house approximately 100 students. The 36,000 sq. ft. building will feature 25 apartment-style suites. Each two-bedroom suite will include a living room, two bathrooms, two walk-in closets and a kitchenette. All of the air-conditioned suites will be wired for cable and Internet access. A wireless Internet gathering room, one of the first of its kind, will be located on the first floor. It will also feature a laundry room on each floor, a student lounge, and multi-purpose room.
Upperclassmen currently living on campus will be given the first opportunity to reside in the new hall. McCarthy Hall also will be used in the summer months to accommodate overnight guests attending conferences and camps held at Saint Xavier University.
The new apartment-style residence hall is named in honor of Mother Mary Huberta McCarthy, R.S.M., Saint Xavier’s President from 1945 – 1960. Mother Mary Huberta’s nephew, John McCarthy, is now Chair of Saint Xavier’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Richard A. Yanikoski, President of Saint Xavier University, said, “Mother Huberta McCarthy oversaw the development of the 103rd Street campus with loving care. The family tradition is carried on today by her nephew John C. McCarthy, who as chairman of the Board of Trustees is leading another major expansion of Saint Xavier’s campus facilities. The University owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the McCarthy family.”
During her tenure as President, Mother Huberta was the driving force behind the relocation of Saint Xavier College in the 1950s from its former site at 49th and Cottage Grove to its present campus at 103rd and Central Park.
“Mother Huberta McCarthy, R.S.M., was a woman of faith and vision. Her leadership in bringing Saint Xavier to its current site is without parallel,” said Yanikoski.
Mother Mary Huberta McCarthy was not only President of Saint Xavier College, but she also served as the Sisters of Mercy Mother Provincial beginning in 1960.
Sister Joy Clough, R.S.M, President of the Sisters of Mercy regional community in Chicago said, “ Naming the new residence hall for Mother Huberta is a fine way to recognize in a permanent and visible manner her enormous contribution to Saint Xavier and to underscore the important role the Sisters of Mercy have played throughout the University’s history.”
