Mammogram Screenings at Saint Xavier University

CHICAGO (August 21, 2001) – Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in American women and is the leading cause of cancer death among women between the ages of forty and fifty-five. If detected early, breast cancer can be treated effectively.

Saint Xavier University and Nineteenth Ward Alderman Ginger Rugai announce on-campus mammograms for the detection of breast cancer. The breast cancer screenings will be offered on Tuesday, September 11 and Wednesday, September 12 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Saint Xavier, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

Joy Lee, Associate Director of Employee Services, said the idea for bringing the traveling mammogram was inspired by her ordeal with breast cancer and the diagnosis of three other Saint Xavier employees over the past year. Alderman Rugai is also a breast cancer survivor.

“I recently completed treatments for breast cancer and was fortunate to have it detected early due to having a mammogram,” said Lee. “I’m grateful for this technology, which basically saved my life.”

Mammograms, which are low dose x-rays of the breast, can reveal changes too small to be felt by even specially trained examiners. This simple procedure can detect cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages, up to two years before lumps can be felt.

The cost of the screening is $105.00 and an additional $10 for a breast exam.
