CHICAGO (August 28, 2001) – Saint Xavier University Sophomore Tessa Murphy had the thrill of her life recently when she introduced President George Bush at the day camp where she was a counselor.
The resident of Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood was working at the YMCA of the Rockies in Colorado this summer when the President scheduled a visit to the popular campground. Administrators chose her to introduce President Bush because of her public speaking ability and her knowledge of the camp, which she has visited since childhood.
“It was absolutely amazing,” reflected Murphy. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to top the experience for the rest of my life.” She also said she was surprised at how much preparation goes into one Presidential appearance, including meetings, briefings, and security checks.
Murphy is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a concentration in Electronic Media and Organizational Communications. She is a student leader and involved in many campus activities including Student Ambassadors, Student Activities Board, Cheerleading, and working at the Convocation and Athletic Center.
