Panel to Address Nursing Shortage at Saint Xavier University Chicago

(September 5, 2001) – The nationwide nursing shortage, which is predicted to get even worse over the next twenty years, is causing strain on both the mental health of health care staff but also the health and safety of their patients. Experts attribute this crisis to several factors including the aging workforce, poor working conditions, low salary, fatigue, and burnout.

Experts in the field of nursing will address this crisis in a panel discussion entitled “Nursing Shortage or Disappearing Act?” The panel discussion will take place on Monday, September 10 in the Formal Reception Room in Saint Xavier’s Warde Academic Center at 6:15 p.m.

A lack of nurses not only puts a additional stress on hospital and medical office staff, but it has an adverse effect on the patient’s health as well, according to Tina Donohue, Adjunct Faculty member of Saint Xavier’s School of Nursing. “We care a great deal about our patients’ wellness and the care they are receiving,” she said. “This is a serious problem affecting the public’s health as a whole.”

Issues to be addressed include reasons for regional and national nursing shortage, recruitment of nurses and students to nursing programs, and providing adequate health care to patients with less support.
