Saint Xavier University Ranked in U.S. News & World Report Best Values, Campus Diversity Lists

CHICAGO (September 27, 2004) -- Saint Xavier University has been recognized once again for its campus diversity among Midwest universities granting master’s degrees, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges” special report, released this month.

The university is listed in the top 10 for Midwestern master’s granting institutions. The magazine’s criteria for ranking diversity factors in the proportion of minority students and the overall mix of groups. Saint Xavier’s student population is 18 percent African American and 11 percent Hispanic.

The magazine also cited Saint Xavier’s average freshman retention rate of 80 percent in its overall rankings of Midwest institutions offering master’s programs.

Saint Xavier’s multi-ethnic population earned a diversity index of .49 on a scale of zero to one, one being the most diverse, with African-American as the largest minority population at 18 percent. Saint Xavier also has a growing Hispanic population that totals 11 percent of the student population. Groups considered in forming the basis for the magazine’s calculations include American Indian, Native American, Asian-American and Pacific Islander, African-American (non-Hispanic), Hispanic and white (non-Hispanic).

U.S. News & World Report’s rankings are based on a national survey of university deans and administrators. Rankings appear in the magazine’s annual special issue, which is available on newsstands late summer and on the Web site at www.usnews.com.
