CHICAGO (October 9, 2000) -- Bob Hallberg returns to the court next month, this time as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Chicago’s oldest Catholic university.
When the Saint Xavier University Cougars take the floor against Robert Morris College at seven o’clock on November 8, Hallberg will coach a team he personally recruited to build a new women’s varsity basketball team for Saint Xavier (His first recruit was Nina Solava from Maria High School.) It’s not the first time he has taken on such a task at SXU: in 1971, a then-27-year-old Hallberg was named the first athletic director and head men’s basketball coach at Saint Xavier.
It has been four seasons since Hallberg coached the UIC Flames, where he coached from 1987 to 1996. In 30 years of coaching, beginning with Kennedy High School in 1966, Hallberg has compiled a record of 579-289, a .667 winning percentage.
To encourage attendance at Hallberg’s first game, the university’s Athletic Department is making an unusual "two-on-one ticket offer." Fans who buy a ticket to the first women’s basketball game on November 8 will also receive a ticket to watch Coach
Tom O’Malley’s men’s basketball team open their season on November 15. Both games will be played at the university’s Convocation and Athletic Center located at 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago. For details, call the Saint Xavier University Athletic Department at 773-298-3101.
