CHICAGO (November 1, 2000) – Fans of women’s basketball no longer have to wait for a new season of the WNBA to get their fix. Saint Xavier University Women’s Basketball coach Bob Hallberg and his newly formed team are preparing for their inaugural season beginning Wednesday, November 8 at 7 p.m. in the main arena of the Saint Xavier University Convocation and Athletic Center.
"Our goal is to be a good team in our first season of competition," said Hallberg. "We hope Cougar women’s basketball will be an exciting, up-tempo brand of fast break basketball that fans will enjoy."
Hallberg will train his team to play "Run and Trap" basketball. It’s an aggressive style of playing with a lot of court action, running, and double-teaming, said Hallberg. To emphasize this, the team jerseys will have "Run and Trap" printed on the backs.
According to Hallberg, the team’s biggest challenge is that it doesn’t have the hindsight of a previous season to improve and build upon. "You are trying to unite 14 girls who haven’t played together and create a system," he said. "Constructing something brand new is a mystery."
