Saint Xavier University Student Receives Student Laureate Award

CHICAGO (November 13, 2000)--Saint Xavier University student, Ranell Cunningham, has been awarded the Student Laureate Award by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. A non-profit organization established in 1965, the Lincoln Academy honors individuals either born or residing in Illinois. The Student Laureate Award is granted annually to an outstanding senior from each four-year degree-granting institution of higher learning in Illinois. The award’s criteria are based on the student’s overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.

Ranell Cunningham is originally from LaPorte, Indiana. She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1997 and is a senior at Saint Xavier University. She will graduate with a B.A. in Sociology and Psychology in May 2001. During her time at Saint Xavier, Ranell has maintained a 3.93 G.P.A. and achieved many honors including the Dean’s List, Presidential, Collegiate, and Athletic Scholar, Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, and NAIA Region Athlete Scholar.

In addition to her stellar academic record, Ranell has also excelled in extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the Cougar volleyball team for four years. In her final year, she was elected as co-captain of the team and has led her team to an outstanding season of 33 wins and 10 loses. "The success of this year’s team is in part a result of Ranell’s contributions to the team. She certainly shows a lot of determination as well as character," says Head Cougar Volleyball Coach, Bob Heersema.

Over the past two years, Ranell has served as the Director of Social Programming for Saint Xavier’s Student Activities Board. In this capacity, she has led the organization and has provided her leadership and dedication to the students. She has been a Peer Mentor, a Student Ambassador, and a member of the SAB Finance Committee. She has also served on the Judicial Board and on the committee for the selection of the Teaching Excellence Award. "Extracurricular activities are the fundamentals to a well rounded college experience," according to Ranell.
