Saint Xavier to Honor its Own for Outstanding Service to University and Community

CHICAGO (November 28, 2000) -- Saint Xavier University congratulates the recipients of the 2000 Saint Francis Xavier Day awards. One member of the student, faculty, and staff communities are recognized every year for outstanding service and dedication to the University and community.

Dr. Angelo Bonadonna, Assistant Professor of English, will receive the Saint Xavier University Award. Dr. Bonadonna lives in Berwyn, IL. Alice Brosius, Office Manager of the Psychology Department, will receive the Staff Excellence Award. She resides in Evergreen Park, IL. Paul Bear, Nursing and Adult College student, will receive the Sister Paulita Morris Award. He lives in Palos Park, IL.

The University will celebrate the Saint Francis Xavier Day on Friday, December 1 with its annual Liturgy, awards presentation, and reception. A Eucharistic Celebration in the McDonough Chapel will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the awards presentation and reception with refreshments from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the Formal Reception Room on the main campus.

Saint Francis Xavier Day is a celebration of Saint Xavier University’s namesakes, patrons, values, and traditions. It is the feast day of Saint Francis Xavier, one of the first members of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, and Spanish missionary to Europe, Africa, and Asia. It is also the name day of Mother Frances Xavier Warde, the woman who brought the first Sisters of Mercy of Chicago in 1846 and founder of Francis Academy for Females, the future Saint Xavier University.

Founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, Saint Xavier University is Chicago’s oldest Catholic university.
