Saint Xavier University Still Growing

CHICAGO (November 28, 2001) – Saint Xavier is at it again. The University is planning its second new residence hall in as many years. The 33-suite apartment-style complex, for 123 students, will open in time for the fall 2002 semester.

The new residence hall will offer students the best of on-campus living. Each suite will have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchenette, and shared living space. The new hall will also feature a "cyber cafe" where students can snack, socialize and study. “It will be a place where students can chat on-line or in person as there will be wireless internet access available,” said Katy Thompson, Director of Residential Life.

Saint Xavier’s need for on-campus housing and expanded facilities has increased with the growth of its enrollment. McCarthy Hall, an apartment-style residence hall for 99 students, opened fall 2001. The McDonough Chapel and Mercy Ministry Center, opened in fall 2000 and serves the spiritual needs of the University; the Shannon Convocation and Athletic Center, which was dedicated in fall 1999, hosts athletic and special events and houses the bookstore, Cougar Pause refreshment stand, athletics offices. Future construction plans call for dining hall, library, and science lab expansions, and a new South Campus in Orland Park.

Once largely a commuter school, the University has experienced significant enrollment increases in the past several years in resident students from both the local area and out of state. In fall 2001, the number of freshmen from out of state doubled and the resident student population grew by 28% from 2000. This year, 37% of all freshmen are from outside the local area and 42% of all freshmen live on campus.

Crain's Chicago Business (July 2, 2001) recognized Saint Xavier as one of the fastest-growing, private universities in the Chicago area (1999-2000). In 1998, the Board of Trustees asked the Saint Xavier University administration to grow the Chicago campus enrollment by 25% over a five-year period. That goal was reached two years ahead of schedule this fall.
