New Saint Xavier Scholarship Honors Hassan and Safia Haddad

CHICAGO (November 30, 2001) – Saint Xavier University professor Dr. Safia Haddad has endowed a new competitive scholarship for SXU students. The Hassan (Husni) and Safia Haddad Peace Award will be granted each spring to an undergraduate or graduate student, and will be based on the student’s essay explaining how the humanities or sciences can promote the pursuit of peace. The award recipient will receive a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 scholarship.

The award honors the work of two outstanding Saint Xavier faculty colleagues, Dr. Safia Haddad, professor emerita, and her husband, the late Dr. Hassan Haddad. Safia Haddad chaired the foreign languages department for 26 years, taught French and the sociology of education, while embodying world culture for countless students. Hassan Haddad was an internationally recognized scholar in Middle Eastern studies. The Peace Award reflects the Haddads’ commitment to peace as well as the global reach of their scholarship, influence, and circle of friends. It also reinforces the University’s commitment to foster peace and justice by focusing students’ attention on the manner in which the humanities and sciences can aid the pursuit of peace.

Students applying for the scholarship may be from any major, program, or school within the University. Essays to be considered for the 2002 Hassan (Husni) and Safia Haddad Peace Award must be submitted to the Office of the Dean, School of Arts and Sciences, by January 15, 2002.
