CHICAGO (Dec. 4, 2003) – Recognizing her outstanding service and contributions to Saint Xavier University, Dr. Sandra Burkhardt, professor of psychology, received the 2003 Saint Xavier University Award at the University’s Founders’ Day ceremony, held Dec. 3.
Part of the University’s faculty since 1990, Dr. Burkhardt “has demonstrated exemplary teaching, research and service achievements, as well as an extraordinary commitment to meeting the needs of our local community,” said Saint Xavier University President Dr. Judith A. Dwyer.
Dr. Burkhardt, an Orland Park resident, conceptualized and developed Project RESPECT (Research and Education on Autistic Spectrum Disorders), which is one component of the Psychology Department’s Community Outreach Program where Burkhardt serves as Clinical Director.
Project RESPECT offers a variety of services – and a supportive, caring environment -- to families in which one or more children have been diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder.
“Dr. Burkhardt’s vision and creativity in establishing Project RESPECT demonstrate her selfless nature and reflect well on Saint Xavier’s concern for others, especially those in need,” Dwyer said.
Each year, the Saint Xavier University Award is given to a faculty member who makes a significant contribution to teaching or a substantial advancement in scholarship and research. He or she may help to improve or restore the natural and cultural environment and improve the health, welfare and comfort for the young, poor, aged and disabled. A recipient may meet an urgent civic need or perhaps establish a closer bond between the academic world and the community at large.
