Frequently Asked Questions

Educational Administration and Supervision

Who is eligible to receive Type 75 certificate?

In order to be eligible for Type 75 certificate individuals must have:

  • A Masters Degree
  • A minimum of two years cumulative teaching or school personnel experience (as a school psychologist, school nurse, social worker, school counselor, and of course, teacher. Substitute teaching does not count toward the experience.  Working on a Full Time Based contract does).
  • Passing all the coursework leading to Type 75 certificate.
  • Passing the state tests.

What if I already have a Masters Degree?

You may choose to just take the coursework leading to the Type 75 certificate (all the coursework excluding 514 or 2 courses in lieu of it).

What is a cohort?

At the School of Education a cohort group is a group of graduate students who take a sequence of courses leading to a degree together.

Where do I do the internships?

At the school where you are employed, under the supervision of a school administrator and a university supervisor.

What if I leave my cohort and later decide to rejoin?

If you leave your cohort due to unforeseeable circumstances and inform your advisor, you may rejoin your cohort or join another cohort when the sequence of courses allow for you to join. You might have to pay a new rate of tuition if you have to join a different group.

How do I apply for the Type 75 certificate?

Once you are done with the required coursework and have passed the state test(s), you contact the Office of Teacher Education (kinsella@sxu.edu or 773-298-3971) and they will forward the application form to you so that you can complete them on line and you are referred for entitlement (certification).

How many state tests should I take before applying for my certificate?

If you already have taken the Basic Skills Test (#096), just the Type 75 test (#186). If you have never taken the Illinois Test of Basic Skills, you are required to take that test, too.

Do I have to write a thesis?

You may choose to take EDUG 514 and complete a Graduate Research Study or take two additional courses at the School of Education.  This is not an option for cohorts offered at off-campus locations.

What is the cost of each course?

Cohort students pay $100 less tuition per credit than the advertised university tuition. The cost does not change throughout the program, if they stay with the same cohort.

How do I sign up for the state tests?

You can apply on line at www.icts.nesinc.com.
