Awards and Scholarships

The School of Education administrates a number of awards and scholarships annually.  Applications are available beginning in October of the academic year.  Please refer to each application for specific criteria.

The Dorothy Ritter Davis Scholarship (PDF) is open to admitted undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Education with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  This scholarship, which is approximately $6,000, is funded by a donation from the late Dorothy Ritter Davis, class of 1933.

The Elaine Gallagher Science Scholarship (PDF) is open to admitted undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Education who are science majors in secondary education or students in early childhood or elementary education who may teach science at any level. This scholarship is funded by a donation from the estate of alumna Elaine Gallagher and gifts given in her memory. The award will be approximately $1,600.

The Lloyd Leake Scholarship (PDF) is open to undergraduate African-American students in the School of Education with a GPA of 2.8 or higher.  This scholarship is funded by the family of the late Dr. Lloyd Leake, former Dean of the School of Education.  The scholarship is valued at approximately $2,000.

The Dorothy Binder Scholarship (PDF) is open to admitted graduate students in the School of Education.  This scholarship is funded by donations in honor of the late Dr. Dorothy Binder, former School of Education faculty member.  The award will be approximately $1,300.

The Julius and Catherine Heerey Malin Scholarship (PDF) is open to admitted School of Education (except MATL) undergraduate or graduate students who possess the core values of excellence, service and integrity.  Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher. This scholarship is funded by the estate of the late Ms. Helen Heerey, in honor of Julius and Catherine Heerey Malin.  The award will be approximately $2,000.

Merit Scholarships for Graduate Students

A number of awards in the one thousand dollar increment are available to the graduate students who are applying for admission to the School of Education for the programs and meet the following requirements:

  • A GPA of 3.0 at their undergraduate program;
  • A five hundred-word statement describing their academic and professional achievements, and how those achievements distinguish them as a teacher, scholar, or lifelong learner (the Conceptual Framework of the School of Education).

Please submit your applications to Dr. Mitra Fallahi, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the School of Education (fallahi@sxu.edu) by December 20, 2007. A committee of faculty and administrators will review your statement and select the recipients.
