Education Program
The Secondary Education Program prepares candidates to teach students in grades 6 through 12.
Completion of the program leads to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree and prepares candidates to pursue an Illinois Type 09 certificate.

General Education Courses
- Communication skills (12 s.h. required)
Must include EDU 397 (ENGL 356 for Secondary English Majors)
- Mathematics (3 s.h. required)
- Science (6 s.h. required)
Courses must be in Life and Physical Sciences and must include one course with a laboratory component
- History/Social Science (15 s.h. required)
Courses must include U.S. History and U.S. Government
- Literature/Fine Arts/Humanities (6 s.h. required)
- Health and Physical Development (2 s.h. required)
- One 3-semester hour course with a multi-cultural focus
- All majors consist of a minimum of 32 semester hours in that subject area, and requirements are determined by the departments.

- Art, Science/Biology, English, History, Social Science/History, and Mathematics
Recommended Courses
- EDU 359 Methods, Curriculum and Philosophy of Teaching in the Middle School. (This course is required for the middle grade endorsement.)
Requirements for Degree
- Minimum GPA of 2.50 earning grades of “C” or better in all coursework
- Candidates in the Secondary Education Program major in an approved subject area
- All courses in the major
- Candidates minor in Education, completing 27 hours of required education courses, plus the University Core and certification requirements
- Illinois Certification Testing System Basic Skills Test, Subject-Matter Knowledge Test and Assessment of Professional Teaching
