LPN-BSN Option

The Advance LPN-BSN Option offers licensed practical nurses (LPN) the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in a reduced time frame and to qualify for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). The LPN-BSN Option first began in 1991. It was the first LPN-BSN program in the State of Illinois.

Students in the LPN-BSN Option are awarded 15 semester hours of advanced placement credit in nursing after completing 12 semester hours in nursing with a NGPA (nursing grade point average) of 2.3 or better. This award recognizes the LPN's previous education and allows the completion of the five semester nursing sequence in four semesters.

LPN-BSN students may be admitted in the Fall or Spring semester, but must complete at least 12 semester hours at the University before beginning nursing courses. The LPN-BSN “bridge” course NURS 292 is offered every fall.

The pre-clinical level courses in the LPN-BSN Option are:

  • NURS 292 Concepts in Professional Nursing for LPN's
  • NURS 326 Health Assessment
  • BIOL 309 Pathophysiology

The pre-requisites for NURS 292 Concepts in Professional Nursing for LPNs are:

  • COMM 101 or Foundations Seminar II
  • ENGL 101/102 or Foundations Seminar I and III
  • BIOL 202, 203, 206
  • CHEM 107
  • PSYCH 101, 199
  • SOC 210
  • CHEM 108 may be taken prior to or concurrent to NURS 292

Pre-requisites for NURS 326 Health Assessment and BIOL 309 Pathophysiology are as above plus CHEM 108.

The student must complete an Intent to Major in Nursing form upon admission. This includes results of the math and reading scores obtained in the office of Advising and Educational Planning Services indicating competency. The student identifies the semester in which he/she plans to start nursing classes in collaboration with the LPN-BSN Advisor.

The student will be admitted to the pre-clinical level of the School of Nursing upon earning the required 12 semester hours at SXU and completion of the course pre-requisites described above with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 at Saint Xavier University. Students must have a “C” or better in all science and support courses.

LPN-BSN students are admitted to the clinical level of nursing (Junior II) after successfully completing:

  • NURS 292, NURS 236 and BIOL 309 with a grade of “C” or better
  • PSYCH 204 Introduction to the Study of Psychopathology

Completed health requirements are mandatory.
