Director of Campus Ministry

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846, Saint Xavier University was the first Mercy College in the United States and is Chicago’s oldest Catholic university. Function: The director provides pastoral leadership within the university community to foster the spiritual growth of the students through faith formation, service outreach, and developing student leaders.

The director must be an active Catholic active and competent in working with persons of many cultures, ethnicities and religious traditions. The director must possess an understanding of Catholic tradition and the ability to create and execute programs and serve as a strong ministerial leader.

Administration and Supervision
• Reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs
• Participate in Department meetings, supporting the vision and contributing to the achievement of strategic plans
• Direct all activities of the Office for Campus Ministry
• Work with collaboratively and supervise Two Graduate Assistants to ensure and develop student retreat opportunities, faith sharing groups, and service experiences.
• Recruit, supervise, and evaluate Two Graduate Assistant Ministers
• Provide direction for the department’s strategic planning
• Campus Ministry budget management
• Represent Campus Ministry on Student Affairs and other University
committees as invited or requested

Liturgy and Prayer
• Coordinate with the Liturgical Minister as they supervise the Sunday night
student Mass
• Participate in the planning and implementation of major University liturgical celebrations
• Provide presence and active engagement in the liturgical life of the
University community
• Exercise leadership of prayer as needed and requested

Retreat Program
• Collaborate and plan the annual Busy Persons’ Retreat with the Sisters of
Mercy Vocation Director
• Direct Graduate Assistant Minister in facilitation of Quest Retreat each
• Direct Graduate Assistant Minister in facilitation of Growth Retreat each
• Direct Graduate Assistant Minister in facilitation of Awakenings Retreat each semester
• Work with Peer Minister to direct Outdoor Retreat each fall
• Work with Peer Minister to direct Women’s Retreat each year
• Work with Peer Minister to direct Senior Retreat each spring

Service Outreach
• Collaborate and direct Spring Break Service Trips
• Sign up and Reserve spots at spring break service sights
• Application Process

• Trip logistics

• Implement and coordinate weekly service opportunities with Service Peer Minister
• Plan and execute the Fall Post Graduate Volunteer Program Fair
• Invite volunteer organizations to campus for students to be exposed to long term service opportunities after graduation
• Collaborate and direct the Mercy International Service Trip to Belize each

• Direct Saint Xavier’s Bonner Leadership Program
• Coordinate with designated service sites
• Provide weekly service reflections
• Supervise the Bonner Scholars and assist them as they grow in their
knowledge of service and leadership
• Coordinate and participate in Regional/National Bonner meetings
• Report as needed to the National Bonner Headquarters

Student Peer Minister Leadership Program and Development
• Direct monthly Student Peer Ministry Training and Formation Program for all Peer Ministers
• Facilitate spring application and selection process (part of unified student
leadership application coordinated as a division of Student Affairs)
• Conduct assessment meetings with Graduate Assistant Ministers who
supervise Resident Peer Ministers and other select Peer Minister by offering feedback and evaluation
• Collaborate with Residence Life to direct residence hall ministry, regular
programming, crisis/emergency management, pastoral care to students,
August and January training, ongoing development training
• Pastoral Care
• Provide pastoral care to members of the university community (i.e. student, staff, or faculty illness, experiences of loss)
• Support the spiritual growth and spiritual direction ministries directed by
Director of Mercy Care
• Ensure the availability and staffing of student Bible Study groups and Prayer groups
• Provide field education opportunity and supervision for graduate ministry
interns from Catholic Theological Union and provide assessment and
Qualifications: • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Saint Xavier University
• Roman Catholic active in her/his faith
• Master’s degree in ministry, theology, or equivalent field
• Experience in working with students of diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds
• Highly collaborative and empowering work style
• Knowledge of the Sisters of Mercy charism and tradition
• Knowledge of Church documents as they related to execution of the duties of the Director of Campus Ministry (i.e. Empowered by the Spirit and Sons and Daughters of Light)
• Competency in Microsoft Office software
• Experience in budget management
• Experience of working in young adult or college campus ministry preferred
• Experience supervising professional staff preferred
