Visual Arts at SXU
Saint Xavier recognizes that the fine arts are the heart and soul of academics and should be celebrated. Please refer to the different locations around campus where art is exhibited and changed periodically.
The SXU Gallery
Located in L-114 of the Warde Academic Center, the SXU Gallery showcases the artwork of local, regional, national and international professional artists throughout the academic year. We strive to present a variety of styles and media with six exhibits that often amplify University-wide initiatives, complement curricular programming and witness the integration of art and spirituality. Shows are accompanied by a welcoming reception and a presentation by the artist. These exhibits, open to the public as well as the University community, present a sophisticated caliber of visual expression, as well as inspiring stimuli for our students.
The SXU Gallery is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the academic year. The Gallery is closed during the summer, University holidays and in between exhibits for de-installation and installation. Please call 773-298-3081 to confirm hours for a specific exhibit.
An Archive of Gestures
Millicent Kennedy Nora makes lasting scenes out of shadows, records time with cut hair, and builds an archive out of her art practice over the past ten years of embroidery, printmaking and installation work. These multi-media spaces mimic remembered and imagined domestic tableaux, and are mediations on the results of small cumulative change and accumulation: the building blocks of life.
The show runs January 13 to February 1, 2020 in the SXU Gallery, with a presentation by the artist and reception on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.
Chicago artist Jennifer McNulty will be exhibiting her 3-D photo mosaics which combine the graphic beauty of photography with the sculptural quality of tiled mosaics. This marriage of methods give the art depth and engages the viewer by requiring them to come close to see the small detailed photos and then step back to observe the compound image that is formed. Each piece carries a social message from feminism to civil rights to Chicago's history and beyond.
The show runs February 12 to March 6, 2020 in the SXU Gallery, with a presentation by the artist and a reception on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.
Senior Art and Design Thesis Exhibition I will feature the drawings of Yasmine Lopez and the photography of Francesca Cepero.
The reception is on Saturday, March 28, 2020.
Senior Art and Design Thesis Exhibition II will feature the design work of Rosaly Garcia, Carlos Flores, Edgar Hernandez, Joine Leake, Monique McHerron and Sarina Perez.
The reception is on Saturday, April 18, 2020.
The Visual Arts Center Gallery
Located off campus within the Visual Arts Center at 10435 South Spaulding, the Visual Arts Center Gallery is dedicated to showcasing student and alumni artwork. Since the production of art is best complemented with the exhibition of that work, the VAC Gallery offers the opportunity for students to experience the rigors and joy of presenting their art to the public.
Formerly a church, the building has been converted into an art "sanctuary" of teaching studios, lecture/meeting rooms, a student/alumni Gallery and a state of the art computer lab. Parking is limited to faculty and staff. Shuttle service is provided on a regular basis during the academic semester. For more information please contact Gallery Director, Cathie Ruggie Saunders at 773-298-3087.
The CIDAT Lounge
Located in the Warde Academic Building, the CIDAT Lounge has a large faceted viewing screen that showcases time-based media from students in computer graphics, multi-media and animation classes. For more information please contact the Chair of Art and Design, Nathan Peck at 773-298-3876.
The Bishop Quarter Room
Located in the Stump Library, the Bishop Quarter Room also showcases students' work from various other courses. Oftentimes two or three students join together to thematically create an exhibit. Such group exhibits are frequently celebrated with a small reception. For more information please contact the Chair of Art and Design, Nathan Peck at 773-298-3876.
