Dr. Michael Stewart graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1995 with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from Eastern Illinois University (1990), and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree from the University of Akron (1988).
Dr. Stewart has been active in the fields of composition and arranging since 1989, having over one hundred works published in the United States and in Europe.
He also has been recognized five times with premieres at the International Trumpet Guild Conference (1994, 1998, 2000, 2013, and 2014), and has had two articles published in the ITG Journal, Jr. and one for the Texas Bandmasters Association. From 1997-2002, Dr. Stewart directed the Chicago Brass Choir.
Under his direction, this ensemble performed at the 2001 ITG Conference in Evansville, IN.
Dr. Stewart released two albums of original solo trumpet music (Songs in the Key of Trumpet, 2015, and Different Voices, 2014), and in 2013, he produced the 2-DVD documentary "The Jazz Big Bands of FitzGerald's," which details the stories of the jazz big bands that have populated FitzGerald's Night Club, the leading Chicago area live big band performance venue, for over thirty years.
Outside of music in Chicago, Dr. Stewart has made four trips to the Dominican Republic, where he works with a friend and missionary, providing musical events for children in the mountains north of Santiago, and similar events at a Santiago orphanage and a pre-school for children who have no government- provided schooling available to them.
Currently, Dr. Stewart teaches Music Theory for Saint Xavier, and Music Theory, Aural Skills, Music Appreciation, and Trumpet for the College of DuPage. Also, he plays lead trumpet for several Chicago area jazz big bands, and a wedding band (the Standing Room Only Orchestra). He also runs his own music publishing business, StewMuse Publications, as well as TrumpetFish Publications, a website with free downloads of educational and recreational music and materials for young trumpeters.
