Honors Guest Lecture 2001-2002
Mr. Michael Flannery - News Editor, CBS Chicago
Michael Flannery, Political Editor for CBS 2 News delivered a lecture titled "Journalism, Politics and The Good Life: Reflections from a Television Political Analyst since 1980" at Saint Xavier University as a guest lecturer for the Honors Program.
In his engaging comments, Mr. Flannery impressed upon a large audience the challenges and dilemmas of covering political stories for television news and current affairs programming. He drew from his extensive experience vivid examples demonstrating tensions between the need to cover issues in all of their complexity versus the demand to appeal to a popular audience. He made lively and colorful use of video clips from his own coverage of important stories and impressed everyone with his commitment to the highest standards of ethical responsibility in his profession.
Flannery is responsible for covering City Hall, Springfield, and all elections. As investigative reporter for the station, he exposed insurance fraud that cheated thousands out of health insurance, and he uncovered pernicious abuse of patients in state-run mental hospitals. He has received two Emmys for his work.
