Saint Xavier University is pleased to offer the Summer Logic Dual Credit Course. The course is open to high school students in grades 11-12 and will introduce students to key logical concepts and their application. Logic, or the study of reasoning, is a discipline that examines what it means to think and reason well. The course will introduce students to different types of argument, including deductive and inductive reasoning. In addition, students will learn how to identify arguments and assess whether an argument is a good or bad argument through lecture by our faculty and collaborative group work. The course will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June 3 through July 3.
|Enrolled in grade 11 or 12 during fall 2019|
|Must have taken an Algebra or Geometry high school class|
Why should I take a course in Logic?
- Preparation for further college-level work: Logic is an important tool for any field of study. Math, computer science, law, medicine, science and the humanities all utilize logical thinking. In addition to getting a head start on your college career, this course will provide you with a critical tool for college success in your chosen field of study.
- Self-improvement: Learning how to think and reason in a clear manner will improve your ability to critically assess and defend your own beliefs and values.
- Developing a critical life skill: An understanding of logic will prepare you to evaluate and respond to the information challenges we all confront daily. The media, advertisers, politicians, teachers and others regularly provide us with new information in an effort to persuade us to believe one thing or another. Logic will help you critically assess this information.
