The Learning Center/Writing Studio offers free peer academic tutoring for a variety of courses at SXU. Tutoring begins the second week of each semester and there are typically around 30-40 courses that already have tutors available from the time that we open our doors to the Friday before finals. Course-specific tutoring is by appointment only and appointments must be made, at minimum, the day prior to the requested time. Our tutors work with students of all ranges of ability and are more than happy to assist any SXU student.
SXU tutors are subject specific, meaning they have taken the same course that they tutor in the past here at SXU and have excelled in that subject area. Tutors also undergo approximately 10 hours of tutor training each semester. During training, tutors learn about tutoring theories, along with best practices and methodologies for tutoring different groups of students. Tutors are also trained in assisting students with academic skills like note-taking, organization, and test taking. All SXU tutors participate in training each semester they work in the Learning Center/Writing Studio. Our training aligns with the standards and outcomes developed by the College Reading and Learning Association's International Tutor Training Program.
Each tutoring session is tailored to each individual learner. To make the most of your tutoring session, we suggest you prepare a list of questions and topics that you would like to cover during your tutoring session. It may be useful to your session to bring class notes, past exams/quizzes, or your course textbook.
