The Cougar Map is intended to guide you with suggestions for potential activities and career paths that can help you along your educational journey. Although everyone has different abilities, experiences and challenges, this Cougar Map can be used with the help of your advisors to prepare for the future you want with a clear vision of your college-to-career pathway. Take advantage of your summer by taking courses to graduate on time or earlier.

Visit the library for the appropriate resources to investigate different hospitality fields and career paths.

Consider pursuing a second major or minor to achieve your career goals.

Be mindful of important dates, i.e. semester ends and begins, deadline to withdraw from a course, petition for graduation.

Meet with faculty who academic Success Coaches and attend a Success Workshop.

Showcase your Hospitality Management portfolio of the professional industry certifications such as Food & Beverage, Customer Service, Hospitality Professionals and others.

Consider joining a student club such as Women Entering Business or National Society of Minorities in Hospitality.

Enroll in Cougars LEAD that supports leadership development and begin working on your leadership certificate.

Research opportunities to take part in a service trip or study abroad program.

Participate in the Midwest Region of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality.

Take on a leadership role within the NSMH.

Volunteer with SXU’s Campus Ministry or a local organization or non-profit.

Mentor the next generation of NSMH.

Join a professional hospitality association, such as National Restaurant Association, Illinois Hotel Association, etc.

Talk to your advisor about preparing for internship experiences.

Create a LinkedIn profile and establish meaningful connections within your academic and personal circles.

Attend GSM’s Careers in Management and Marketing panel to explore your career options.

Meet with the GSM Experiential Learning Director for assistance with internships that offer relevant experience in, hospitality management.

Participate in conferences held by professional hospitality management associations.

Visit Center for SUCCESS to create a job search plan, sharpen your resume and practice interviewing.

Attend job, graduate school and intern fairs to help prepare you for what comes next after college.
