Credit for Prior Learning
Saint Xavier University recognizes that education can occur outside the classroom environment through work or personal experience. Students acquiring knowledge within a particular subject area other than formal college classes, such as job skills, military experiences, certifications, travel and personal, may contact an advisor to learn more about obtaining credits.
The following resources are available through Records and Advising:
Adult learners may earn up to 27 college credits for designated courses through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) or department challenge examinations. The University requires a score of 50 on each exam title. For information as to which course requirements can be satisfied through testing, students may contact the Office of Advising or visit the CLEP Examination web page. To view a schedule of testing dates or to register for a CLEP exam, please visit the Testing Registration web page.
Students who wish to earn credit through portfolio assessment will need to submit a request to determine where credits might apply and to confirm eligibility. Students who pursue this option will need to complete an online non-credit course to begin this process.
American Council on Education (ACE) Credit
Saint Xavier University awards credit for military training and other non-college sponsored learning activities according to current recommendations of the American Council of Education (ACE). Credits awarded for corporate experience or military training are noted on the student's transcripts. College credit may be awarded for work-related training, professional certifications and licensure earned by the student if the organization providing the training program is recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE). These credits do not apply toward the residency or entrance requirements, and they do not apply toward a student's GPA. ACE transcripts are posted without charge. For more information, contact SXU's Office of Records and Advising at 773-298-3501.
