Bachelor of Science in Nursing Learning Outcomes

These student learning outcomes apply for all undergraduate BSN degree programs. Students will:

  • Synthesize theory and research-based knowledge from nursing and the liberal arts and sciences as a foundation for professional nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, negotiation and collaboration skills with diverse clients.
  • Integrate critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, rational inquiry, problem-solving skills and creativity in professional nursing practice.
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of clients using current technologies and data from organizations and health care systems.
  • Utilize evidence-based practice to design, manage, evaluate and coordinate health care in diverse settings with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Provide competent care that is culturally sensitive and respectful to the health care needs of diverse populations.
  • Use traditional and developing methods of discovering, retrieving and managing information in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate accountability in nursing practice based on professional values of respect, caring and justice.
  • Synthesize knowledge of health care delivery systems, social policies and environmental factors and their effect on clients.
  • Demonstrate political awareness by participating in professional activities that affect the practice of nursing globally.

Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological and physical sciences as they apply to the development of speech, language, hearing and swallowing processes.
  • Students will examine basic human communication and swallowing processes and their normal development.
  • Students will analyze certain speech and language disorders and how these may warrant clinical intervention.
  • Students will interpret and evaluate contemporary professional issues and current research in the field of speech-language pathology.
  • Students will demonstrate competence in critical thinking and in oral and written language skills.

Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders Learning Outcomes

  • Graduates will demonstrate a wide theoretical base for understanding normal development of basic human communication processes, as well as the nature, causes, evaluation and treatment of disorders of communication and swallowing, including issues related to culturally diverse populations.
  • Graduates will demonstrate competence in management of clinical subjects across the life cycle who are delayed or disordered in the development or use of effective communication and/or who exhibit disorders of swallowing.
  • Graduates will demonstrate competence with skills in clinical diagnosis and intervention, interaction with families of individuals with communicative impairments and collaboration with other professionals for efficient and effective management of persons with varied needs.
  • Graduates will develop a value for scientific rigor and a spirit of inquiry for entry into their professional careers.
  • Graduates will function independently as lifelong learners.

Master of Science in Nursing Learning Outcomes

The following statements are the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program learning outcomes that are met by graduates in all MSN tracks. In addition, each MSN track prepares graduates to meet the competencies required for their specialty (Family Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Leader, Executive Leader or Nurse Educator).

  • Synthesize knowledge from other disciplines within nursing theory, research and policy to improve health care delivery and outcomes.
  • Assume a leadership role in designing, providing and coordinating comprehensive care in complex and varied settings.
  • Lead initiatives to improve quality, safety and communication in the management and provision of health care.
  • Translate evidence into practice to improve patient and population outcomes.
  • Evaluate outcomes of care through analysis of aggregate data and appropriate application of informatics and health care technologies.
  • Advocate for patients/populations, the profession and health-promoting policies across the health care continuum.
  • Apply professional standards within a framework of ethical decision-making and an awareness of personal and professional values and beliefs.
  • Practice in collaborative and interdependent relationships with diverse patients, populations and colleagues across a variety of health care settings.
  • Design patient/population-centered and culturally responsive strategies in the delivery of clinical prevention and health promotion services.
