Because we offer a broad range of majors and minors, you will have the flexibility and faculty support to design a course of study that will help you achieve your educational and professional goals. For some students this may mean a double major in English and Communication, for others a minor in Writing with a major in Biochemistry. The faculty in the Language and Literature Department is committed to exploring the inextricable links between language, literature, and rhetoric in the contexts most relevant to our students. Please review the program requirements and course descriptions in the SXU Academic Catalog for more detailed information.
The English Education major is a 42 credit-hour program designed for students who wish to become English Language Arts teachers in Illinois secondary schools. As well as providing a strong foundation in the disciplines of English, this major focuses on the preparation of teachers according to CAEP/NCTE and Illinois Content Area Standards for Educators. Students who seek Illinois secondary licensure through the English education major must also apply for admission to the Education Department's secondary education program and complete that program's required courses as well as the state licensure requirements.
