Sociology Four-Year Academic Plan

120 credit hours are required for Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Sociology studies human societies, the groups that compose them and the interaction that occurs in them. The sociological perspective is critical to the interpretation of key modern issues, including gender, race, aging, bureaucracy, discrimination, family, poverty and urban change. Detailed course information can be found in the academic catalog. Students should use Academic Planning on the mySXU portal to schedule courses and track degree progress.

*One of the natural science courses must have a lab component.

Sociology Minor

Students must complete 18 credit hours including the following:

  • SOC 101
  • SOC 300
  • one Social Inequality Requirement (see catalog list) and
  • 9 hours of Sociology electives

Social Work Minor

Students must complete 21 credit hours including the following:

  • ANTH 101
  • PSYCH 101
  • SOC 190
  • SOC 216
  • SOC 375
  • plus one course from the "Race, Class, Gender and Society" category,
  • and one class from the "Working with the Individual and Family" category (see catalog list).
Note - SOC 216: Career Training in Social Work (3). This required course is a Fall I 8-week course. This course should help students secure their internship for the spring semester.

SOC 190 is offered every fall, SOC 375 is offered every spring. SOC 216 is offered every fall only for students who minor in social work and who plan to take SOC 375 in the spring. Students can take SOC 190 and SOC 216 in the same semester.
