STAT Brown Bag Project
On the evening of March 15, 2017 about 20, alumni, students and community members gathered in the Atrium to make and pack lunches for our neighbors in need. It took a little over one hour to make 300 lunches! The donations were accepted by Cart with a Heart, a non-profit organization, created and operated by SXU Alumna Stacey O'Brien '08.
More than three years ago, Stacey started making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a few men she saw holding "homeless" signs almost every day. On her own she passed out over 1,200 lunch bags! As the project grew, she realized she needed some help! Now, with the help of friends, family and some amazing volunteers, she prepares and passes out bagged lunches in the warmer months and homemade, hot soup in the colder months. The food is distributed wherever a need is identified.
To date our SXU Brown Bag Brigade has made over 8,000 lunches which benefited these additional non-profit agencies: Port Ministries, Southwest PADS, Maple/Morgan Park, Food Pantry, Evergreen Park Food Pantry.
