Gary English is honored to serve as the assistant professorial lecturer, director of Instrumental Ensembles within the Music Department at Saint Xavier University. His responsibilities include conducting the SXU Wind Ensemble, teaching classes in music education, and leading the Cougar Marching Band. Mr. English recently served as a graduate teaching assistant at both Northwestern University and Louisiana State University.
Prior to pursuing graduate studies, Mr. English taught in the public schools of Virginia for eight years, most recently serving as band director at South County and Chantilly High Schools in Fairfax County. While at South County, Mr. English led an award-winning program that consistently received superior and excellent ratings at all contests and assessments. He has performed with ensembles throughout the United States, Germany, and Ireland. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician for marching and concert bands in Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, and Virginia.
Mr. English earned the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University. He has recently completed coursework towards the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from Northwestern University. His principal conducting teachers are Mallory Thompson, Damon Talley, and Dennis Llinás. Mr. English is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and holds professional memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, Virginia Music Educators' Association, Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
