Saint Xavier University hosting Teach-In on Iraq War

Panel discussion to be held on April 13th

CHICAGO (March 28, 2005) – The Saint Xavier University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is sponsoring a Teach-In on the Iraq War from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 in the Butler Reception Room in Warde Academic Center on Saint Xavier’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Aisha Karim will present “Soldiers’ Resistance.” Karim is a professor in the department of English and Foreign Languages at Saint Xavier University.

Dr. Peter Kirstein will present “Iraq is Another Vietnam.”
“Both wars are wrong, both wars are quagmires and both wars are unwinnable,” Kirstein said. Kirstein, who organized the event, is a professor of history and political science at Saint Xavier University and is a member of the Illinois state council of AAUP and serves ex-officio on the Executive Committee of the SXU chapter.

Michael Rabe, professor of art and design at Saint Xavier will present, “Images of Torture: Past and Present.” Rabe and Kirstein originally decided to organize the forum for faculty-led discussions following September 11. Rabe will present recent images and contextualize them in reference to works of art, including Assyrian relief carvings currently on display at the British Museum.

“Like all Americans, and indeed citizens of the world at large, I was shocked by the photographs released a year ago, documenting prisoner abuse by American citizens at Abu Gharaib,” said Rabe. “I don’t think the Socratic admonition to ‘know thyself’ is a sufficient credo to live by, but it is a necessary first step in our necessary journey toward peace and harmony in the world.”

Michael O’Keeffe, professor of religious studies at Saint Xavier, will present “Roman Catholic Just War Doctrine and Iraq.”
Jayne Hileman, professor of art and design at Saint Xavier, will serve as moderator.

After each panelist is finished presenting, the remainder of the time will be dedicated to audience discussion and participation.
