SXU braves the shave with St. Baldrick's event on March 29

Date:03/16/2016

Do you have what it takes to brave the shave? Join local community members as they shave their heads in solidarity with children who are battling cancer in exchange for donations of support at Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) 2nd Annual St. Baldrick's event on Tuesday, March 29 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Shannon Center, 3700 West 103rd Street. This year's theme is "Past, Present and Future," where SXU will honor two of its very own students who are currently battling cancer, Nicole Munoz and Tara Hill.

As an event honoree, Munoz represents the "Past" as she's an SXU alumna who is currently battling Ewing Sarcoma since her diagnosis in October 2015 following the discovering of a rapidly growing tumor on her uterus. She received extensive surgery, a complete hysterectomy and an extensive treatment plan, which she is currently undergoing. Prior to this, Munoz diagnosed with stage III-B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in January 2009. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology with a minor in Sociology and had to put her career on hold to continue her fight against cancer.

Hill serves as the representative of the "Present" as she's a current SXU student majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Psychology. Since March 2014, Hill has battling Ewing Sarcoma where she has gone through rigorous treatments to help decrease her ever-growing tumor in her chest wall. As a result of countless doctor visits and tests, she recently discovered her liver is not functioning properly, which affects how she can metabolize the toxins out of her body and is currently undergoing further examinations.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation symbolizes the "Future" for the event in hopes that SXU's efforts will help bring us one step closer to a cure for childhood cancer research. Through the volunteers, donations and general awareness of the Foundation, SXU seeks to help Munoz and Hill reach remission and eventually a cure.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives. At the event, people will shave their heads in solidarity with those battling childhood cancer in exchange for donations of support from family and friends. The funds are raised are distributed to hospitals and research institutions across the country to fund cutting-edge, life-saving research.

This year's event is sponsored by Saint Xavier Council (SXC), Student Nurses Association (SNA) and SXU's Student Veteran Alliance (SVA). For more information about SXU’s St. Baldrick's event, please go online.
