Saint Xavier University (SXU) encourages its students to use their skills and create a lasting impact. Mark Piper, alumnus of SXU, has achieved that through his writing. The National Catholic Reporter, a Christian news source for Catholic and religious people, has given him a column and published his insightful work.

Piper is an SXU graduate from the class of 2010. He earned his bachelor's in political science, as well as a minor in pastoral ministry. Currently, he serves as the director of Mercy Associates for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas West Midwest Community.

In his most recent article, entitled "Get religion, lose weight--sort of," the impact of religion on health and the link between the two are the main focus. Piper focuses specifically on charisms, or "spiritual gifts" as powerful yet weightless. He suggests that the ability to identify with such immeasurable forces fosters an environment of peace.

"But it was the gift, the charism, they were endowed with that was unique, purposeful; and that is what impelled their followers to engage in prayer, service and the works of mercy in their own way within the Gospel," wrote Piper.

It is always a pleasure for SXU to see its alumni spreading the mercy tradition an experiencing success. Congratulations to Mr. Piper on a job well done!
