SXU Art Gallery presents Yvette Kaiser Smith's 'Variable Expressions of a Constant'

Saint Xavier University (SXU) is excited to announce the upcoming Art Gallery show, featuring the work of Yvette Kaiser Smith. The final exhibit of the semester, titled "Variable Expressions of a Constant," will be in the gallery starting Wednesday, November 1 through Tuesday, November 28 in the SXU Art Gallery on the Chicago campus, 3700 West 103rd Street. There will be a reception on Wednesday, November 1 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a presentation of Kaiser Smith's work.

Kaiser Smith was born in Czechoslovakia in 1958, and moved with her family to Dallas, Tex. in 1969. In 1990, she received a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in art, with concentrations in sculpture and photography. After moving to Chicago, she earned her master's from the University of Chicago in 1994, once again focusing on sculpture. Kaiser Smith's unique work often incorporates the use of math, bringing together the abstract and the absolute.

The following is a statement from the artist which reflects her artwork for this exhibit:

"I create geometric abstractions in crocheted fiberglass and laser-cut acrylic by devising systems for mapping and visualizing numeral values of sequences from the numbers pi and e, prime numbers, and at times, Fibonacci numbers and Pascal's Triangle."

SXU's Art Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, please visit SXU's website.
