Join the iQuit Project!

Date:03/06/2017

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is recruiting current smokers who want to quit for a new study led by ACS researchers and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

There is no fee for the program and participants will receive compensation for their involvement.

The iQuit Project uses a web-based text-messaging platform to help people quit smoking. The messages will include round-the-clock encouragement, advice, and tips for quitting and staying smoke-free.

Some participants will also get one-on-one support from a former smoker who has been trained as a peer mentor, who uses their own quit experience to help others. Peer mentoring for health promotion is a popular idea that has been adopted by Weight Watchers, Alcoholics Anonymous, and many other programs, but we don’t yet know if it also works for smokers trying to quit. The study will try to answer that question by comparing smokers who receive peer mentoring with those who do not.

All study participants will get text messaging support that will advise them during the process of quitting, which has shown to be an effective tool for becoming and staying smoke-free.

Smokers interested in participating must take a quick two-minute survey to determine their eligibility. Once accepted, they will be asked to choose a quit date within 15 days of enrolling.
