What is summer vacation without camp? This June, Saint Xavier University (SXU) will be offering two math camps to children and teenagers in the community. The Mathematics and Art Summer Camp is for grades 6 to 8, and the Secrets of Mathematics Summer Camp is for high school students. Both camps run June 26 to 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be held on SXU’s Chicago campus, 3700 West 103rd Street. Faculty from SXU’s mathematics department will be instructing the camps.

In the Mathematics and Art Summer Camp, students will examine the intersection of math and art through a mixture of hands-on and computer activities. Areas of study include: symmetry, modular arithmetic tables, star polygons, origami, Mobius strips, the artwork of M.C. Escher, tessellations and fractals. Students will combine their knowledge to create mathematical designs, which will be featured in a PowerPoint art show. Parents are invited to attend the show, which will be on Friday, June 30 from 1 to 2 p.m.

The Secrets of Mathematics Summer Camp for high school students explores the history of mathematics, 3D printing, number theory and cryptography. Students are stimulated through a combination of lectures, firsthand experiments, and group work.

SXU Math Summer Camps cost $215 per individual, which includes lunch and a t-shirt. Space is limited, so students are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Parents/guardians will need to fill out a health form, which should be returned to the Office of Academic Affairs at least one week prior to the camp’s start date. They can be mailed to Debbie Nutley at 3700 West 103rd Street, Chicago, IL 60655, emailed to nutleyFREESXU, or faxed to 773-298-3002.
