Career Services Help Prepare SXU Students for Successful Futures

Date:10/11/2018

Saint Xavier University (SXU) students have a rich history of breaking boundaries, many as the first generation in their family to attend college. Whether it is in the classroom, the community or in their future careers, SXU places the success of its students above all else. It is in this spirit that the University offers their students so many ways to improve their resumes, networking skills and interviewing talents.

This year, the Office of Career Services kicked things off with the very popular Cougars Connect: Career Networking Night. This is an event open to students of all levels where they are given the chance to mingle with returning alumni, build relationships for their professional lives and hear ways in which successful men and women have applied their SXU degrees in the world outside the classroom. Not only does it provide individual growth, this event also helps put the journey from college to career into perspective, setting up new expectations and developing areas for improvement.

"No matter what major a student is studying, having these opportunities to develop these skills is incredibly important," said Jodi Martin, assistant director for Career Services. "Networking Night is designed to have something for everyone and help our students' transition from the classrooms to successful careers."

Cougars Connect does more than introducing students to successful alumni and teaching them how to offer a firm handshake. Career Services offers a wide range of opportunities for SXU students to gain valuable experience, whether that is with an on-campus job or attending events like the Cougar Career Chats. These chats are informal walk-in opportunities on campus to hear more about upcoming events and programs, ask questions, review resumes and learn information on timely career topics. Once students have the handshake mastered and a crisp, clean resume at their disposal, SXU takes it another step further and arranges a chance to meet employers at the Internship and Job Fair.

The journey from high school graduation to a successful career is made of constantly evolving parts. From the moment SXU students step on campus, opportunities and tools are set before them, and by the time they reach graduation, they not only leave the University with a degree but also with an understanding of resume composition, a series of internships and part-time positions, a steadily growing professional network and the ongoing support of the SXU community.
