SXU honors Chuck Newman with the Shield of Saint Xavier award

Date:05/07/2018

Saint Xavier University (SXU) hosted its 33rd Annual Presidents Scholarship Celebration, a fundraiser for student scholarships, on April 7 at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, 221 North Columbus Drive. In addition to a reception and dinner, guests were treated to a special performance by Frenchie Davis, a finalist on NBC-TV's "The Voice," whose Broadway experience includes "Rent" and "Dreamgirls" and a Grammy nomination for "Ain't Misbehavin'."

The event also honored Charles R. Newman with Shield of Saint Xavier award, the University's highest honor.

"What an incredible honor. There are just no words that can describe that unexpected honor," says Chuck Newman. "I have so much respect for the Sisters of Mercy and their mission to serve those in need. To me, this is an extremely prestigious honor presented by an organization that exemplifies service beyond self."

Mr. Newman, is founder and CEO of Newman Architecture, an award-winning commercial architecture and interior design firm found in 1982 in Naperville. He also is co-founder and president of the not-for-profit Schools for the Children of World (SCW) established in 1997. Shield of Saint Xavier recipients are nominated by the University community and are selected by its Board of Trustees.

"We congratulate Mr. Newman for his work to ensure that education is accessible to underprivileged children and we are also thankful to members of the Saint Xavier community, who generously support our students' academic careers," said SXU President Laurie M. Joyner, Ph.D. "Education is the foundation to the future."
