SXU's Muslim Student Association raises $2.5K for charity with basketball tournament

Date:04/18/2018

Saint Xavier University's (SXU) Muslim Student Association (MSA) recently held its fifth annual charity basketball tournament. Their goal was to raise money in honor of former MSA member, Tara Hill. The proceeds of the event went towards a project called "Water for Life" that aimed to construct a well in an underdeveloped Islamic community that did not have access to any clean drinking water. MSA was able to complete this project as a part of the organization Helping Hands for Relief and Development. Students and alumni alike came together to put the program together and make it a massive success.

"MSA strives to utilize its efforts and resources to give back to local communities, and to communities around the world," said junior MSA member Jannah Alaiwi. "Our mission is to aid those in need in any way we can regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, class, location, religion, or culture. Helping Hands is an organization that provides smaller organizations with the information, the tools and the foundation necessary to carry out charitable endeavors."

MSA made the choice to partner with Helping Hands for Relief and Development because their goals so closely aligned with MSA's mission for service in underdeveloped nations. The tournament consisted of 12 teams and MSA was able to raise $2,500 from admission fees, t-shirt sales and several generous donations. The event was a success with both participants and spectators and the money raised is going directly to building a well in Pakistan.

Thank you, MSA for your continued service to the SXU community and beyond!
