SXU's Ludden Speech and Language Clinic Celebrates 60 Years of Transforming Lives

Date:10/02/2019

The Ludden Speech and Language Clinic at Saint Xavier University (SXU) has served the community since its inception in 1959, helping to make a difference for thousands of clients. For individuals suffering from a wide range of disorders and trauma, the clinic offers a supportive, caring environment and serves as a source of hope, working to develop effective methods of evaluation and treatment of individuals with communication disorders. Students studying to enter the medical field as speech-language pathologists are offered clinical experiences and gain the foundation for analyzing, understanding, and treating speech and language disorders.

The Ludden Speech and Language Clinic celebrates 60 years of transforming lives as a service to the community in addition to providing an opportunity for SXU speech-language pathology students to gain high-impact learning.

SXU alumna Julie Geraghty '09 holds a profoundly personal connection to the Ludden Speech and Language Clinic that ultimately influenced her career in speech pathology.

"I was really inspired to become a speech-language pathologist because my brothers had sustained traumatic brain injuries and the Ludden Speech Clinic at SXU played a very important part in their rehabilitation," said Geraghty. "One of my brothers continues to attend the clinic to increase his overall communication."

After earning a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Geraghty began work as a speech-language pathologist at Advocate Christ Medical Center. The two-year graduate program at SXU offered the rigorous academic and clinical preparations Geraghty would need to join the medical workforce.

"SXU was an excellent experience," said Geraghty. "I gained so many life-long friends and colleagues through the two-year program. I graduated with about 30 others and it's amazing to see just how many opportunities this degree offers. Some of my peers went on to home health therapy, the schools, early intervention and even their own practice. The possibilities in this career field are endless."

SXU is thrilled with its many distinguished alumni's accomplishments and is committed to providing a vibrant learning facility with unique educational opportunities for students and the community abroad. Congratulations to the Ludden Speech and Language Clinic for celebrating 60 years! SXU is proud to celebrate its legacy of servant leadership.
