Date:01/03/2019

Saint Xavier University's (SXU) Jaclyn Murawska, Ed.D., associate professor of Mathematics, presented at several conferences throughout 2018.

Covering a number of topics to a wide range of audiences, Murawska presented 'Seven Billion People on Earth: a Task for Fostering Productive Struggle' at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Conference in Washington, D.C. in April 2018; 'KenKen Puzzles for Developing Number Sense and Procedural Fluency in Grades K-5' at the WIU Mathematics Teachers' Conference in Macomb, Ill. in April 2018; 'Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching at the Developmental Level: Does Caring Count?' with Keith Nabb, Ph.D. of the University of Wisconsin - River Falls at the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges Conference in Allerton, Ill. in April 2018; 'Star Polygons and Modular Quilts' with David Klanderman, Ph.D. at the Southwest Chicago Math Circle at SXU in May 2018; and 'Origami for Engineering: Collapsing, Functional, and Strong—Oh My!' with Nabb at both NCTM in April and at the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Conference in Orlando in November 2018.

Murawska and Nabb also published their joint paper "Motivating Calculus through a Single Question" in the journal PRIMUS: Problems, Resources, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies.

Murawska earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Masters from the University of Illinois at Chicago before receiving her Ed.D. in Curriculum Leadership, Cognate in Mathematics from Northern Illinois University. Murawska is a former secondary education teacher and has been the recipient of two teaching awards from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois Chicago and from the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago for excellence in high school teaching.

At SXU, Murawska specializes in teaching mathematics and methods to K-12 pre-service teachers. As a mathematics educator, her overarching goal has been to facilitate her students' understanding of mathematics by helping them create their own meaningful connections between ideas.

SXU is proud of the amazing work performed by Murawska and is honored to have her as a member of its distinguished faculty.
