For the first time ever, Saint Xavier University (SXU) celebrated a very special event – Fiesta de la Familia, or Family Fest. The event presented an opportunity to bring families together, introduce them to SXU's many student services, and help them learn more about SXU's history and dedication to helping their students reach success.

Such events allow families to meet the faculty and staff who educate and support their students in an informal setting. More than two-thirds of SXU students are first-generation, and as integral as families are to students' educational journeys, it's important to connect everyone with the resources available to students for success.

"This inaugural event fostered many great connections and celebrated the pivotal role played by families in the success of our students. We are dedicated to educating for competence, character and career success while remaining intentional about keeping costs low and aligning supports to better serve students and their families from admission through completion and beyond," said President Laurie M. Joyner, Ph.D.

More than 150 students and their families and friends joined together to enjoy an evening of food, fun and memories. Calabria, Joey's Red Hots and Rainbow Cone served treats from food trucks and a mariachi band entertained the crowd.

Attendees also had a chance to meet with representatives and learn about services available from the College of Arts and Sciences; Graham School of Management; School of Nursing and Health Sciences; SXU Counseling Center: EXPLORE STEM; Student Life; Center for SUCCESS; Student Success Program; Transfer Student Services Center; Student Success Academy; Office of Financial Aid; Office of Admission; Office of Mission and Heritage; SXU Athletics; Country House Kitchen and Dining Services; and more.

Students and their families had a wonderful time participating in the festivities.

"This event is a great way to debrief after a long day of classes. I am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate with good food and friends," said Alexis Martinez, a sophomore.

"The mariachi band is a fun representation of heritage and a great way to celebrate with families," added Britney Morales, a junior.

"This has been a wonderful experience. I have enjoyed being able to connect with the offices that support my son's journey," said Viola Israel, mother of communication major Jotham Israel.

Given the event's huge success and the joy it brought to families of the SXU community, Fiesta de la Familia/Family Fest will be celebrated annually.
