Saint Xavier University (SXU) recently welcomed Las Locas Comedy to campus. The event was hosted by SXU's Sin Limites, a Latinx-serving organization launched in fall 2021 that aims to empower, provide mentorship, instill values and support an immersive culture of diverse student heritage.

Organized by Sin Limites Advisory Board members Gloria Avalos and Elena Carrillo with a goal in mind to deliver a cultural experience to SXU students, the event brought stand-up comedy to SXU for the first time in nine years.

Las Locas Comedy is a Chicago comedy showcase highlighting Latina/Latinx comedic talent and hosting a platform to discuss issues and challenges facing Latinas, women of color, and the LGBTQIA+ community in a thought-provoking (and hilarious) way.

The comics that performed covered topics related to identity, gender, sexuality, familial and romantic relationships, living during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, being first-generation, and the struggles of being a college student.

"Comedy is a great unifier that people can relate to. Bringing Las Locas Comedy to SXU also tied in seamlessly to the Women's History Month calendar of events, as they center on not only Latinx voices, but also female talent from the Chicago area. This mirrors both a portion of our Sin Limits members and the SXU student body. Both groups are on the intersections of those identities, so we thought it was valuable for SXU students to see representation in media by way of the comedy space," said Avalos.

With around 60 attendees, there is certainly a demand for future comedy events at SXU.

SXU Sin Limites is committed to providing experiences and opportunities aimed at helping Latinx students succeed academically, professionally and socially through education and retention, mentorship, and social and community involvement. All are welcome to join Sin Limites meetings and events. If interested in applying for membership or learning more, visit the Sin Limites webpage.
